Amigos y colegas,
Nuestros corazones han estado apesadumbrados en los días recientes por los tristes hechos ocurridos en Pittsburg, los ataques al derecho de nacionalidad por nacimiento, y por los 5000 militares que serán enviados a la frontera de EEUU con México como si la gente que busca asilo fuera la mayor amenaza, mientras que la violencia supremacista blanca cobra vidas.
Muchas personas se han acercado al UUSC (Comité de Servicio Unitario Universalista, por sus siglas en Inglés) preguntado cómo pueden ayudar a las caravanas de migrantes. Queremos compartir con ustedes lo que estamos haciendo, con la esperanza de que decidan ayudar.
Solidaridad con la caravana de Migrantes.
El comité de servicio es parte de una coalición interreligiosa que esta en comunicación regular con personas acompañando las caravanas de hondureños, avanzando ahora por Guatemala y México. Dos necesidades inmediatas han sido identificadas:
- Se necesitan voluntarios urgentemente en la Annunciation House en El Paso, Texas, quienes están recibiendo semanalmente cerca de 1000 personas buscando asilo. El colegio U/U de justicia social esta organizando equipos para periodos de servicio de mínimo una semana, así como ubicando voluntarios a largo plazo en un refugio de migrantes en Guadalajara, México. - La coalición interreligiosa de inmigración, de la cual el UUSC y el UUA son miembros, ha identificado una necesidad inmediata para que más clérigos de Estados Unidos acompañen las caravanas físicamente mientras atraviesan México. El papel del clérigo acompañante es pesado física y emocionalmente y requiere por lo menos español conversacional . Los organizadores anticipan que esta oportunidad de servicio va a cambiar la vida de los que decidan participar. - Lo mas probable es que haya necesidad de mas acciones publicas a petición de las organizaciones base, nos aseguraremos de mantenerlos informados.
Nuevo reporte de Honduras.
En mayo pasado, el Comité de Servicio en alianza con SHARE- El Salvador y Hermanas de la Caridad, envió una delegación de solidaridad a Honduras para acompañar y oír las historias de los Hondureños que han sufrido represión política y violencia, a raíz de la elección fraudulenta del presidente Juan Orlando Hernández. Esta semana, a medida que las noticias de las caravanas de migrantes hondureños se escuchan en la radio, hemos publicado un nuevo reporte: «The Struggle for Human Rights and Transformation in Honduras.” Estamos agradecidos con nuestros aliados en Honduras: Radio Progreso/ERIC y Foro de Mujeres por la Vida. Acción publica: Ponga fin a la detención indefinida de familias.
La administración de Trump está tratando de desmantelar parte por parte el sistema de asilo de Estados Unidos, y de restablecer la separación de familias al forzar a los padres a decidir si prefieren que sus hijos pasen meses y años en detención con ellos, o que sean separados otra vez. Su nueva propuesta de anular el “Caso Flores”, un fallo de la corte que protege a los niños, está abierto para comentarios del público. Friends and Colleagues,
I know our hearts have been heavy in recent days with so much difficult news: Pittsburg; attacks on birthright citizenship; and 5,000 troops sent to the border as if people seeking asylum were our biggest threat – while white supremacist violence takes lives.
Many people have reached out to UUSC asking how they can do more to support the migrant caravan. We wanted to share our latest with you in hopes of opportunities to collaborate.
SOLIDARITY WITH THE MIGRANT CARAVAN
UUSC is part of an interfaith coalition in regular communication with people accompanying the Honduran migrant caravan on their journey through Guatemala and Mexico.
Two immediate needs have been identified:
Volunteers are urgently needed at the Annunciation House in El Paso, Texas, which is receiving over 1,000 asylum seekers a week. The UU College of Social Justice is organizing teams to go for a minimum of one week, as well as placing longer-term volunteers at a migrant shelter in Guadalajara, Mexico. Please share the link to learn more and apply: http://www.uucsj.org/ volunteer/us-asylum/ The Interfaith Immigration Coalition, of which UUSC and UUA are members, has identified an immediate need for more U.S. clergy to physically accompany the caravan through Mexico. This role will be physically and emotionally demanding and requires at least conversational Spanish. Organizers anticipate this will be a hugely impactful and a life-changing experience. Details are forthcoming, but please have potentially interested clergy reach out to hhafter@uusc.org for further information.
There will likely be additional mobilization for public action at the request of border grassroots partners – we will make sure to keep you updated.

Last May, UUSC partnered with SHARE-El Salvador and Sisters of Mercy to send a faith solidarity delegation to Honduras to accompany and hear directly from Hondurans facing political repression and violence following the fraudulent re-election of President Juan Orlando Hernández. PUBLIC COMMENT ACTION: STOP INDEFINITE FAMILY DETENTION
The Trump administration is trying to dismantle the U.S. asylum system block-by-block, and renew family separation by forcing parents to choose whether their children spend months to years in prison with them, or get separated again. Their new proposal to override the Flores Settlement, a court ruling protecting children, is currently up for public comment.
